Let me ask you this. Do you believe that once you are signed to a major publisher you will become rich and famous?

I sure did.

You see, I sold over 250,000 copies of my book How to Succeed with Women, but it wasn't until I began self publishing books and creating "backend" products that I began making significant money.

In 1997 I got my first major publishing deal with Penguin Books. My book began selling like hot cakes.  I was featured on MTV, CNN, Fox News and in Maxim, Cosmo, Playboy and a tons of other publications. I was on over 2,000 radio shows. My book was translated into 12 languages and had won worldwide acclaim.

I was top of the world and felt like all of my dreams of becoming a best selling author had come true.

That was until...the royalty checks from Penguin Books started rolling in.

I was shocked and stunned when, even after all of the success and sales the book had achieved, I was being paid pennies on the dollar. How could this be possible? I asked.

When I could not get a straight answer and was told to "read my contract," a contract so confusing and full of terms and conditions most smart, educated people would not understand-I even have a Masters Degree for goodness sake and the contract still made no sense to me--I became disillusioned with the publishing world.

I found myself struggling to understand how to make real money with my book. I had always believed that getting signed to a major publisher and getting a book deal was the way to go. Maybe you believe that too.

Once I discovered the truth, I knew I needed to find another way. I stumbled upon a formula that turned my books into best sellers and made me tons of money without an agent or publisher.

Although I was enjoying my success immensely, I still felt bad every time I would meet a new, aspiring author who would ask me for advice. I hated to burst their bubble and tell them the cold, hard truth about the publishing industry.

It was almost like telling a kid there is no Santa Claus.

The hope in their eyes would disappear once I explained that getting published does not equal getting rich, famous and being on Oprah. I just knew I had to offer them more. I had to give them hope and explain there was still a way for them to make their dreams come true.

Then at a seminar in 2006 I met a woman, Christina Rowe, who was writing a book about divorce. She came to me like the others, seeking my knowledge and expertise. She wanted to "pick my brains" and find out the secrets to my success.

When I told her the truth, that her book was basically her business card and that getting published would not guarantee her success as an author, she was stunned. Unlike the others, who usually become dejected and crestfallen, Christina probed me further. She wanted to know exactly how I made money and how I gained enormous success with my books and products.

I decided to take her under my wing, so to speak, and teach her the ropes. Christina has gone on to create a thriving business from creating singles and divorce expos to producing The Largest Divorce Party in the U.S. She has appeared on numerous TV. and radio shows, including The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet. Lies authors have been fed to keep them running in circles, wasting their time trying to snag that elusive publishing contract.

But do not despair, I would never reveal this to you without giving you an easy- to- follow blueprint. A roadmap to author success that will give you the tools and skills you need to take your book to best seller status, bringing you fame and publicity while putting money in your pockets-- all without an agent or publisher.

Let's get these myths and lies that the publishing industry would have you believe out of the way. Here are the 7 biggest lies the publishing industry does not want revealed:

Big Lie #1:

Getting your book published by a major publisher is the way to go.

If you said "yes" then you are definitely a first-time author. Publishing has changed dramatically over the past decade, to the point where major publishers rarely take on new authors. And when they do, they pay crappy advances and expect the author to do the majority of the publicity anyway.
 

Think about it. They expect you, as a new author, to do all your own marketing, so why go through a major publisher?

As publishers get bought by big companies and are increasingly consolidated, the bottom line--how much money they can make on a book... and how easily they can make it--becomes the ONLY criteria for whether or not a publisher buys your book. Your book may be great, but if a publisher can't easily sell it and make money, they will pass on your manuscript.

One of the biggest problems with major publishers is that they want you to earn back your book advance right away and once you do they tend to drop you like a hot potato.

Big Lie #2:

You believe having a book published through a major publisher will make you rich.

Get ready for these two words: Deep Discount. Deep discounting is only one of the many ways that publishers screw authors out of money. It doesn't matter much if you sell thousands of copies of your book, if you only make seven cents per copy, as one author I know did on his book. The contorted clauses of your contract may make it next to impossible--or actually impossible--to figure out how much money you will make when a copy of your book sells.

Big Lie #3:

Think that if you get signed to a big publisher, the publisher will set up tons of publicity for you?

Once again, this was once true. It is still a little bit true: for three months after your book is released, a publisher normally has their publicity department work with your book. They work on many new releases at the same time. When I have been published by a major publishing house (Penguin Books), their publicity department set up radio appearances, and managed my book tours.

However, even that promotion was somewhat anemic. And worse, after those three months pass, you are functionally dead to most publishers. They've moved on to the next great thing, the next easy score, and are usually unwilling to lift a finger to promote you. Yes, unwillingly even if some easy action--like sending ten copies of your book to a major TV show, which is interested in having you on--could sell thousands of copies of the book! Often, the publicity department won't even return your calls after those three months.

It's like the aftermath of a bad one-night stand. You no longer exist.

Even worse, publishers are famous for dropping the ball on books entirely. I wrote one book because the publisher came up with the idea and asked me to write it--only to have them drop it,  without any promotion at all, and put it out of print within months of its release. Their "genius" marketing department decided at the last minute the book was not in fact very sellable, even though they lured me into writing it by repeatedly telling me how the title and concept was ripe for TV and radio talk shows and would make me tons of money.

Big Lie #4

Do you think when you publish your book and you'll definitely get on Oprah?

Get on national television, and your problems are solved! You are certain to sell a lot of products then. This was true when there were three networks. Now there are hundreds, each with a VERY TINY slice of the viewership pie.

By the way, getting on Oprah is not easy.

Did you know that the Oprah show only has 525 segments a year? Well, according to a producer at the show, they are pitched ten thousand ideas each WEEK!. So while being on Oprah is a great idea, you have to compete with the other 519,999 ideas they are getting pitched each year for those 525 segments. Many first time authors feel they will definitely get on Oprah and end up failing miserably by holding on to a dream that is virtually certain to NOT to happen. 

Big Lie #5

Think the majority of income made as an author is made through the sale of your book?

This is one of the biggest myths of being an author. As I said earlier, you tend to only make pennies per book sold through a major publisher. And even as a self-published author you only make $10.00 to $15.00 per unit sold.

The real money as a published author is made through the products and services you up-sell to the buyers of your book. This means that your real money is actually made from seminars, coaching, and other derivative products you sell the people who purchase your book.

One of my clients, a chiropractor, hired me to help him write and publish a book on stress management. This doctor was having his book published so that he could GIVE THE BOOK AWAY FOR FREE. "Is this guy nuts," you ask? No, he realized that the real money for him was in speaking and consulting gigs, and that having a book out would give him the extra credibility he needed to greatly expand his speaking and consulting business.

Big Lie #6

Think that self-published books are not taken seriously?

Again, this is nuts. Very famous authors have started by self publishing their books. A few self published authors who achieved amazing success include:
